Overview of Sinfonia's AGM on 4 Feb. 2012 |
A certain momentum was generated in 2011 with Sinfonia’s concerts and activities. It has been gradually building over the past few years no doubt, but there was a distinct impression at February’s AGM that Sinfonia is beginning to bloom. All three formal reports presented - from the president, honorary conductor, and the treasurer - overflowed with positivity. Outgoing president, Rob Stephens listed some areas which have consolidated in his three years’ tenure: the continuing improvement of the organisation’s financial position, the growth in the orchestra and its musical development under James Hannah, the scholarship program - now in its third year, and Sinfonia’s growing audience support in all the communities where we’ve performed. “In summary,” Rob closed his report, “I see a bright and exciting future for Sinfonia.” This was echoed in James Hannah’s conductor’s report where he cited the contributions made by various individuals including Iain Pole as assistant conductor, Juen VanHand as leader, Dorothy Mowat as librarian, and Rob and the board members combined, all leading to Sinfonia’s success. “There is no doubt that in the past year we have moved ahead and there appears to be greater confidence in nearly all areas,” James reported. James was also clearly excited by the prospect of the increased involvement of John Kellaway in 2012 as a visiting associate conductor of the orchestra. In David Bond’s treasurer’s report the columns all added up to the pleasing picture of Sinfonia now in a better financial position than ever. We were able to purchase both a new drum kit, and an electronic keyboards last year, plus some much needed small percussion instruments. The federal government Volunteer’s Grant, and major fundraising raffle added significantly to the concert profits to leave Sinfonia with a net surplus for the year of $4800. Everyone involved should feel proud of this result, as Sinfonia’s success depends on the combined efforts of nearly our whole membership. |

Bean Bar Night - 24 March |
Coming up first on Sinfonia’s 2012 calendar is a special dinner for the wider public at Taree’s Bean Bar Café/Restaurant, with live musical entertainment provided by Sinfonia musicians in small ensembles to suit the intimate setting. This will be held on Saturday, 24 March at 6pm.
For those who haven’t enjoyed a meal before at the Bean Bar, I can tell you that it is not surprising this restaurant is currently one of the most popular in Taree. I’m sure table spaces will fill quickly so book early. The restaurant/café is located on the riverside at 1 Pulteney St. (opposite the Council Chambers) Ring 6550 0022 to book. A portion of the meal charge will be donated back to Sinfonia. $60 for three courses, $50 for two courses of a special set menu.

Sinfonia seeks to engage more with children in 2012 |
This year Sinfonia will be holding its annual Open Rehearsal on Saturday, 26 May at Tinonee Public School Hall, 2-4pm. This came out of an invitation last year from a parent committee at the school to form a partnership with Sinfonia in order to foster more music in their school. While Sinfonia is a community orchestra for the whole mid-north coast and can’t show any particular preferences, we were so pleased to help Tinonee Public School in this way, and maybe generate some interest in the school children there to take up studying an instrument.
Many children today do not experience the live sound of real orchestral instruments - whether at home or at school. This fact has led to the inclusion this year to two Children's Concerts in Sinfonia's concert calendar, with a special programme all their own!
The timeless musical story of Peter and the Wolf by Serge Prokofieff will be the highlight, with James Hannah narrating and Iain Pole conducting the orchestra. There will be introductions to the instruments, several other short pieces, and an afternoon tea. Two hour-long performances will take place at 1:30 and 3pm on Sunday, 24 June. These concerts will be held in Taree West Primary School Hall, at the special family ticket price of $10. So it is hoped lots of families with children will come along. Spread the word! Tickets may be purchased from Bass 'n' Blues, Taree from early in June.
