Sinfonia's Quaver Fund Initiative |
Make music with us by giving a Quaver of $500 to form a futures fund. Become a Sinfonia Quaver Member supporting your community orchestra and its student scholarships. Sinfonia MNC Inc. is a not-for-profit community organisation and needs a helping hand. This year we are seeking donations of $500 that allow an organisation or individual to have lifetime acknowledgment in every concert programme we produce. This is usually six to seven printed programmes each year. Your Quaver donation becomes part of a permanent futures fund. The already established, James Hannah and Sinfonia Music Scholarship is generously sponsored by our principal conductor, and is awarded to a young, local music student each year. The successful person is encouraged in their musical development and participation in Sinfonia. As our permanent Quaver Foundation Appeal fund grows it will allow Sinfonia to award additional annual student scholarship/s to complement that of our conductor’s generosity and his interest in developing local talent. We need only fifteen Quavers to bring an additional student scholarship to reality, but extra Quaver donations are needed to reach our overall goal that also provides for an annual subsidy for Sinfonia’s general purposes in running the Orchestra. Please keep Sinfonia learning, tutoring, playing and developing our local musicians. By taking the opportunity to donate a Quaver or encouraging someone else to do so, you also help to make your region a better place to live. Your Quaver donation of $500 is tax-deductible and you, a family, a syndicate, a team, your organisation, business, or someone special in memoriam will be recognised in our Sinfonia concert programmes for the life of the orchestra. Remember your Quaver donation will be needed once only. After our appeal target is reached, around ten new Quaver donors will be sought annually to keep the capital in our appeal fund intact forever. This will allow us to continue providing a subsidy for the running of our orchestra, keeping ticket prices affordable, and importantly, to continue the additional scholarship award/s year after year.

What a night! - Sinfonia musicians entertain at the Bean Bar |
Classical strains of Schubert's Arpeggione Sonata performed by clarinetist, Terry Stanton and pianist Sandra Kwa, wafted onto the street of downtown Taree one evening in March, among so many other wonderful musical works for small ensembles. Sinfonia musicians and friends were providing entertainment at the Bean Bar Café and Restaurant to an appreciative group of 50-60 diners.
While plates of grilled salmon and rissotto, or filet mignon, and marinated calamari were being whisked discretely to the tables from the acclaimed kitchen, and bottles of wine were being poured at the bar, the sounds of a woodwind quintet performing five dances by Denes Agay got diners swaying to the rhythm, if not quite swirling on their toes. Margaret Thomas (flute), Ian McLeod (oboe), Terry Stanton (clarinet), Lorraine Tracy (horn), and Pat Guest (cello as bassoon) had performed this same piece earlier in the day at a Forster LinC fundraising concert. Busy weekend for some!
The musical dessert to accompany sweets was a tour of the world by string quartet - Juen VanHand, Nyssa Milligan, Raye Milligan and Cheryl Meyer. Light pieces which evoked such diverse places as Greece, and India, 1920s Chicago, and Buenos Ares were thoroughly enjoyed by all. As coffee came, a rousing arrangement of traditional fiddle music from early America, Durang's Hornpipe topped off the night.
Sinfonia president, Anne-Marie Barnett hosted in warm fashion, and encouraged diners to show their appreciation and support for Sinfonia by purchasing raffle tickets on the night. One lucky person also won tickets to a Sinfonia concert of their choice just by sitting in the right chair! With a generous donation from Bean Bar managers, plus the frills, Sinfonia came away with $850 to launch the year!
Thanks to all the performers, to Anne-Marie, and to Ray and Tony of the Bean Bar! Don't miss the next Sinfonia dinner/concert at the Bean Bar on Saturday 8 September. |

Sinfonia seeks to engage more with children in 2012 |
This year Sinfonia will be holding its annual Open Rehearsal on Saturday, 26 May at Tinonee Public School Hall, 2-4pm. This came out of an invitation last year from a parent committee at the school to form a partnership with Sinfonia in order to foster more music in their school. While Sinfonia is a community orchestra for the whole mid-north coast and can’t show any particular preferences, we were so pleased to help Tinonee Public School in this way, and maybe generate some interest in the school children there to take up studying an instrument.
Many children today do not experience the live sound of real orchestral instruments - whether at home or at school. This fact has led to the inclusion this year of two Children's Concerts in Sinfonia's concert calendar, with a special programme all their own!
The timeless musical story of Peter and the Wolf by Serge Prokofieff will be the highlight, with James Hannah narrating and Iain Pole conducting the orchestra. Also included will be introductions to the instruments, Haydn's Toy Symphony with children's participation, a couple other short pieces, and refreshments . Two hour-long performances will take place at 1:30 and 3pm on Sunday, 24 June. These concerts will be held in Taree West Primary School Hall, at the special family ticket price of $10. So it is hoped lots of families with children will come along. Spread the word! Tickets may be purchased from Bass 'n' Blues, Taree from early in June.
