Orchestra receives federal Grant Print

Recently Sinfonia MNC became a fortunate recipient of a federal Volunteers Grant from the office of the Minister for Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, Jenny Macklin. For a total of $4048. the grant covers the purchase of some much needed equipment including a photocopier and printer, a binding machine for scores, two copies of the music software, Sibelius, a First-Aid kit, and funds for travel reimbursements.

Speaking on the board's behalf, Sinfonia's vice-president Cheryl Meyer said, "As anyone who works for a voluntary organisation knows, so much is given by members to support activities. Any extra help, such as this grant, feels like a windfall. It's a real boost."

Looking for strings Print

One of the joys of learning to play a musical instrument is making music with other players. Sinfonia welcomes competent string players to join and perform with the orchestra. As a community orchestra there are no auditions to join, just a commitment to rehearse and perform together. The orchestra is conducted by Port Macquarie musical identity, James Hannah. Assistant conductor is Iain Pole of Laurieton.

Sinfonia rehearses on Saturday afternoons in Taree usually on a fortnightly basis. There are nine scheduled rehearsals each semester in preparation for the two concerts series - one in June and one in late November. The orchestra has members of all ages from young teens to seniors with a range of playing ability, who come from communities across the region.

Any resident of the Mid North Coast who plays a violin, viola, cello, or double bass and would like to meet other community members with musical interests and play music together for the joy of it is encouraged to contact Sinfonia’s vice-president, Cheryl Meyer on 6551 8926.

Sinfonia is also open for musicians of other orchestral instruments to join in the brass, woodwinds, and percussion sections.
